Brief History of NJCPA The New Jersey Collegiate Press Association was founded in 1952 by Dr. Herman A. Estrin, an English professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark. Dr. Estrin – or "Doc" as his students and many others across the U.S. knew him – developed NJCPA as the nation's first statewide college press group. He held meetings of college journalists during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Doc served as NJCPA's executive secretary until 1975. In addition, he was one of the founding members and a past president of the National Council of College Publications Advisers. That organization has since changed its name to College Media Advisers. After Doc retired from NJIT, he was named Professor of English - Emeritus. However, without his guiding hand, NJCPA went into hibernation. In 1996, after meeting with representatives of New Jersey Press Foundation, Doc gave NJPF permission to use the name New Jersey Collegiate Press Association for a "new" organization. Thus, this website carries the name of the original association and follows the same ideals that Doc developed. In 1998, Doc was honored for his 60 years of teaching. He died on May 7, 1999.
